Abstract

This chapter deals with the allegorical interpretations that are presented in the High Middle Ages and deals with the basic problems of already anticipated exegesis. It discusses the Jewish exegesis of ass speaking that should be an integral part of the Christian interpretation in the early modern period, and reconstructs the basics of physiological reconstruction of the ass in the High Middle Ages. The chapter makes clear how the decisions in the Middle Ages remains exists in the Catholic and Protestant Comment literature till to the 18th century. Some commentators of Baroque explain the relationship between donkey and angels in the light of Christian demonology. Samuel Bochart gives a solid summary of Jewish exegesis. Other commentators focus their attention in the 17th century once again on the phenomenon of animal language.
