Abstract

Aerial photography was tested for its usefulness to estimate gull populations. The maximal confidence limit between counts of the same colony on different photos was 20.5% (mean: 13%). The conversion factor for calculating the number of nests was 0.84. Ground estimates of the gull population were lower than our results from aerial photography. Changes in the gull populations could be determined by both methods with a tendency in ground samples to overestimate the change. Aerial photography seems to be an appropriate method for quick sampling large gull colonies.
