Abstract
A die is a device, usually of made of steel, having a specific shape or design geometry which it imparts to a plastic melt pumped from an extruder (Fig. 5.1). The function of the die is to control the shape of the extrudate. The important word is control. In order to do this, the extruder must deliver melted plastic to the die targeted to be an ideal mix at a constant rate, temperature, and pressure. Measurement of these variables is desired and usually carefully performed [269, 328, 418, 424, 434].
