Abstract
The last book to be unpacked Afrikaans poetry has been extensively influenced by the Bible. The works of all the most important Afrikaans poets have connections with the Bible in one way or another. As a matter of fact, the development of Afrikaans, the instrument of the poet, has been significantly influenced the Afrikaans translation of the Bible. Believing Afrikaans poets are not the only ones that have been influenced by the Bible, as we can see in the work of Leipoldt, neither do only Protestant Afrikaans poets manifest Biblical involvement. Roman Catholic poets have made important contributions to Afrikaans poetry by means of biblical intertextuality.

Afrikaans poetry has been extensively influenced by the Bible. The works of all the most important Afrikaans poets have connections with the Bible in one way or another. Dit geld eweneens van Afrikaans: Die medium wat elke digter vandag gebruik, is in ’n baie groot m ate gevorm deur die Afrikaanse Bybel, nog voor die digter ’n enkele gedig geskryf het om self iets vir sy taal te doen. Wat ons nie moet nalaat om te noem nie, is dat Totius se Psalmberyming, wat die mees direkte digterlike verband met die Bybel is wat daar maar kan wees, een van sy beste bydraes is tot ons literatuurskat - en ’n groot bydrae sal dit bly, selfs al sou mense dit nou al wil vervang met iets wat hulle vermoed beter gaan wees. Van Van Wyk Louw het ons byvoorbeeld die gedig ‘Ignatius bid vir sy orde’, wat begin met die woorde: Dat pyn bestaan, is nodig, Heer, en in sy ‘G root Ode’ in sy laaste bundel, Tristia, staan daar: ’n god wat nie pyn het, dié is wegwerplik. En dan kom Sheila Cussons later, as Rooms-Katolieke digteres, as dié figuur wat die Christelike lyding omvattend in haar poësie ter sprake bring
