Abstract

A member of the Virginia Tech women's soccer team refused to kneel in support of the Black Lives Matter movement during the team's opening match — despite the coach and other team members’ decision to kneel. During halftime of the match, the coach allegedly berated the student‐athlete for “doing her own thing.” The coach engaged in the same behavior at a film‐review session the following week. He removed the student‐athlete from the starting lineup and reduced her playing time for the next two games. The student‐athlete resigned from the soccer team after the third game of the season.
