Abstract
The thermal dissociation of dicyclopentadiene in a liquid crystal N,N′-bis(4-octyloxybenzylidene)-p-phenylenediamine as solvent has been studied in a gas chromatographic reactor. Reaction rates are reported for the smectic (180.6 – 193.6 °C) and nematic (204.7 – 218.7 °C) mesophases of the liquid crystal. A clear discontinuity in the rate of reaction at the smectic-to-nematic transition temperature is observed. Thermodynamics and activation parameters, obtained from the reaction chromatograms, allow the solvent effect of the liquid crystal on the rate of reaction to be interpreted.
