Abstract

The interest aroused in the Dominican Republic by Juan Bosch's position on dictatorship supported by the people, as stated in an article in the Dominican magazine Ahora , reveals clearly the public sympathy that the former president still enjoys as well as the extreme politicization of the masses since the April 1965 revolution. However, with six months to go before the presidential elections, the candidates are frantically active in their efforts to prevent President Balaguer's re-election. Dictatorship supported by the people has provoked violent disagreement within Bosch's Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) itself, where moderates and radicals are pitted against each other. Before his departure for North Vietnam and China, the former Dominican president, currently living in Paris, agreed to answer Claude Kiejman's questions.
