Abstract

AbstractBackground and Significance This monograph on diazolidinyl urea will review the available toxicologic and dermatologic information on this formaldehyde-releasing preservative. First marketed as a preservative in 1981, diazolidinyl urea has increasingly been used as a preservative in topically applied consumer products. Because diazolidinyl urea is a formaldehyde-donor preservative, it unfortunately comes under the specter of formaldehyde toxicology, which is quite different from the toxicology of diazolidinyl urea, and of formaldehyde contact dermatitis, which is related but not the same.
