Abstract

Diatom analyses of organic and minerogenic sediments from a basin near the coast of East Lothian confirmed that a marine incursion occurred there. Two radiocarbon dates of c. 7500 BP were obtained on the peat that over- lies and underlies the marine sediment. The former lagoon supported a fairly rich benthic diatom assemblage, dominated by Paralia sulcata (E.) Cl. during the marine episode and by Fragilaria pinnata E. at other times. It is inferred that a brackish influence persisted throughout the period represented, and that slightly alkaline conditions prevailed.
