Abstract

SYNOPSISMalnutrition and diarrhoeal disease are common in young Australian Aborigines and help determine their poor health standards. The clinical features found in these children show close similarities to those in children in pre‐industrialized communities. The factors involved in the pathogenesis of diarrhoea in these individuals are complex; they include histological damage to the small bowel epithelium; disaccharidase deficiency, bacterial contamination of the upper gut and a high incidence of intestinal infections and infestations. These all corroborate evidence for the well known synergism of nutrition and infection.
