Abstract

• Computational modeling shows diamond can become metallized when under strain. • Diamond nanoneedles can be bent reversibly, inducing the bandgap to vanish. • Strain engineering can metallize diamond without strain instability or graphitization. • Tailoring diamond’s properties using strain opens up applications in electronics, photonics, and optoelectronics.
