Abstract
Extraordinary properties of diamond and the very high pressures that can be achieved simply by reducing the size of sample squeezed between two diamond anvils make the diamond anvil cell (DAC) capable of pressures beyond those existing at the center of the earth. Resistance heating and laser heating can produce temperatures beyond those at the center of the earth. The very simple principle of the DAC allows great versatility of design for accommodating many analytical techniques for determining the properties of materials at these extreme conditions. Background, development, and applications of the DAC are described in this article.
