Abstract

Abstract As-received Courtaulds ‘Grafil HT’ carbon fibres have been tested in simple tension at five strain rates in the range 10 −3 –10 −1 /minute. At least 100 fibres were tested at each strain rate and a statistical analysis of the results revealed a strong dependence of both UTS and Young's modulus on the fibre diameter but no dependence on the strain rate. The simultaneous dependence is related to the internal structure of the fibres and a qualitative discussion of the results is presented.
