Abstract

Developing countries are those classified by the World Bank as being in the ‘moderate economy’ category, with an average gross national product (GNP) of 2600 $US per capita and average purchasing power parity (PPP) of 5200 $US. These include most countries in the Middle East, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia and South Africa with a total population of about 1.7 billion. Countries with a GNP less than 750 $US are categorized within the low economy’ class and are often referred to as ‘underdeveloped’, with an average GNP of 360 $US and PPP of 1300 $US. They include South and East Asia, most of Sub-Saharan Africa, and sporadic countries in the mediumeconomy zone, with a total population of 3.3 billion.
