Abstract

A fundamental problem in topology is to find a good geometric representation of the topological entity. Morse theory and handle decompositions give descriptions of manifolds, that are convenient for the study of their homology groups, for example. Handle slides and cancelations relate different handle decompositions of the same manifold. Triangulations and their subdivisions are also used for manifolds and complexes.
