Abstract

Amniotic band syndrome includes a group of sporadic congenital anomalies characterized by fibrous rings that cause severe external and internal structural fetal defects. The most frequent defects are those affecting the digits, arms and legs, the most typical being congenital amputation. The cause of this syndrome is unknown, but the structures involved seem to be the amnion and chorion; thus fetal contact with the chorion due to rupture of the amnion may produce the fetal injuries, which can be highly variable, depending on the affected parts and the moment of pregnancy in which they are produced. We present a case of prenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis of amniotic band syndrome at 19 weeks of gestation, which produced serious and heterogeneous alterations in the four fetal extremities, with no other ultrasonographic findings.
