Abstract

Between May, 1957, and December, 1972, 126 patients underwent thoracoscopy at Ochsner Medical Center. Biopsy of the pleura was obtained during this examination in the 121 patients who had pleural effusion. There were no deaths; 1 patient suffered moderate morbidity. The biopsy was inadequate in 3 patients and was negative in 3 other patients who later showed malignant pleuritis and in 1 patient later showing probable tuberculous pleuritis. In all other patients die examination correctly reflected the pleural condition.
