Abstract

Summary There are many forms of melanocytic proliferation which present problems in recognition or prognosis. Some of the earlier stages in development of melanoma can be identified and grouped together as lacking metastatic potential. Other lesions simulate aggressive melanoma whilst being benign; these include atypical dermal nodules and bizarre blue naevi. On the other hand the scar-like desmoplastic melanoma can appear deceptively bland. Regression, tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes and ulceration need to be carefully defined in order to facilitate understanding of their significance in melanoma progression and prognosis. Selection of points for discussion has been derived from an analysis of problems presented in consultation.
