Abstract

A nationwide survey of frequencies of diagnostic medial X ray examinations was conducted in Taiwan in 1993 in order to obtain information for the estimation of the population dose from medical exposure. Information on frequencies and types of X ray examinations were collected, except for cardiac cinematographies, interventional radiology and dental examinations. Twelve medical centres were surveyed (100% of the total), 16 area hospitals (36% of the total) and 52 local hospitals (10.3% of the total). Detailed information on 69,746 X ray examinations performed during one week were collected. It was estimated that 521 X ray examinations per 1000 people were annually performed in Taiwan. Chest examinations provided the largest contribution - 46% of all X ray examinations.
