Abstract

Sleep medicine services include the evaluation of adult and pediatric populations for sleep disorders by performing diagnostic and treatment related procedures. Several coding systems are used with the assignment of the diagnosis and performance of diagnostic procedures. The three main diagnostic manuals detailing the coding systems are International Classification of Disease (ICD), International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD), and the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual (DSM). The main coding system for billing of services is the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) for clinical evaluations, diagnostic, and other procedures performed on patients. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) provides a standardized coding system known as the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS). The coding systems of the International Classification of Disease, the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual, and the Current Procedural Terminology as they apply to sleep disorder diagnoses are discussed in this chapter.
