Abstract

The advent of modern civilization and of modified diets has brought an increase in gallbladder disease to the extent that it is now one of the commonest annoyances to mankind. Gallbladder disease ranks second in frequency among the diseases of the abdomen, appendicitis being first. Since the first operation on the gallbladder, in 1618 by Fabricius Haldanus, for the removal of calculi, there has been much progress in the surgery of the biliary tract. The greatest progress has been in the last three decades. The aim of this paper is to discuss diagnosis as a fundamental procedure necessary for the proper selection of treatment.
