Abstract

Periprosthetic joint infection of the shoulder is a substantial diagnostic challenge. Much of the difficulty in diagnosis is directly due to the high rates of positive Propionibacterium acnes cultures in both primary and revision shoulder arthroplasty. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe this diagnostic challenge and to review the traditional and emerging options for diagnostic testing.
