Abstract
No more than a decade ago, the whole issue of the clinical significance, diagnosis, therapy and prevention of infected pancreatic necrosis was only barely perceived by pancreatologists. It was only as recently as 1986 and 1987 that two elegant prospective studies were published by Beger et al. [1] and Gerzof et al. [2], respectively, which were to become the cornerstones of the scientific frame of reference serving as a basis for our concrete understanding of the actual impact of infected necrosis on the natural history of acute pancreatitis and of how an early, reliable diagnosis could be achieved with certainty.
