Abstract

To the Editor.— The question of how to diagnose halothane hepatitis was asked inThe Journal(222:1192, 1972). From the opinions advanced, a reader unfamiliar with immunology could conclude that the disease is well defined. Thus, I want to comment accurately about the current status of halothane hepatitis. In so doing, I will, by the same token, invalidate the immunological criteria advanced by Dr. Schaffner because they are either nonspecific or have not yet been confirmed. Since most of the evidence proposed is derived from Dr. Paronetto's study, 1 I will refer to several points in his article. The positive lymphocyte transformation test (LTT), in eight out of 15 patients with halothane hepatitis, could not be reproduced by four separate groups as cited by Mathieu et al (unpublished data) and Davies et al and Bruce et al. 2 The patient and control groups in some instances differ marginally in their
