Abstract

Candidemia is the most frequent invasive fungal infection in hospitalized patients. This report describes the case of a nine month old baby on whom three colostomy were performed due to intestinal obstruction. After third colostomy, patient presented with fecal peritonitis. Peripheral blood lm examination revealed yeast form of candida. Subsequently candida species was isolated on blood culture and subculture on cornmeal agar and biochemical tests conrmed the presence of Candida albicans. A diagnosis of fungal infection based on the peripheral blood lm has a potential to lead to early diagnosis and prompt treatment of a life threatening infection.
