Abstract

The practical importance and frequency of well child care in both pediatric and general medical practice has been well established. Employing a model of the child as a bio-psycho-social organism, the author has attempted to outline an approach to this phase of practice, particularly the psycho-social elements. Five goals are discussed: (1) assessment of development; (2) prevention of potential disorder; (3) treatment of early disorder, including six suggested techniques; (4) referral of gross disturbance; and (5) establishment of a meaningful relationship with the child and his family, including several general approaches.
