Abstract

In the diagnosis of the optic nerve tumors (optic glioma, optic nerve meningioma) the two methods of ultrasonography and computer tomography have brought a significant progress, two methods which supplement one another in detecting and defining orbital pathology. These techniques do not exclude the necessity of plain X-ray pictures of the orbit including the optic foramen and canal. Definite diagnosis of optic nerve tumors can only be made by biopsy, either during the surgical intervention or pre-operatively by fine needle aspiration (under the guidance of computer tomography. Therapeutic considerations: in optic nerve gliomas rather conservative treatment, in optic meningiomas early neurosurgical decompression and removal.
