Abstract

While most nonviral causes of encephalitis are recognizable by ordinary means, the diagnosis of viral encephalitis is largely one of exclusion. Brain biopsy, the only reliable means of diagnosing herpes simplex encephalitis early, is justified only in certain critically ill patients. There is room for cautious optimism about idoxuridine therapy of encephalitis in man.
