Abstract
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can emerge or be exacerbated during the perinatal period with serious emotional and physiologic consequences for parents and neonates. Many clients with OCD with perinatal onset will have no known risk factors, and up to 57% of those suffering from postpartum depression show symptoms of OCD, making proper and timely identification an essential skill. Recent developments in available treatments can lead to drastic improvements in symptomology and management. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of recent research into OCD in the perinatal period with an emphasis on identification and management of the disorder.
