Abstract

English abstract The Diagnostic History of Women With ADHD – “It Turned Out That It Was ADHD, Not Anxiety or Burnout” ADHD is the neurodiagnosis that is most applied to children and adolescents in Norway today (Bang et al., 2023), yet many girls go undiagnosed well into adulthood. With the help of individual in-depth interviews with a total of twenty informants, I want to gain greater insight into how women with ADHD experience their own diagnostic history, health needs and access to health care. The findings indicate that women’s educational history has had an impact on their access to health care, and that the health services haven’t met the women’s needs to a great extent. The women are calling for more gender-specific knowledge and better differential diagnostics. They point out that the diagnostic manuals used today are misleading, because they largely refer to a symptom picture that corresponds to what we see in boys and men.
