Abstract

Diabetic ketoacidosis is defined as a severe metabolic alteration, characterized by the triad of persistent hyperglycemia, metabolic acidosis and hyperketonemia associated with ketonuria. It often occurs in diabetes patientes who have insufficient insulin, routinely undiagnosed diabetic patients or those who have omission in insulin therapy. The diagnosis and treatment of ketoacidosis could be challenging. In view of the importance and increase of cases of ketoacidoses diabetes in dogs and cats, the aims of this review is to assist the veterinarian and veterinary medicine students to understand the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment.
