Abstract

Early diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (DM) is of crucial importance. Delays in diagnosis lead to worse health outcomes ( WHO, 2016:47 ). An estimated 1.4% of the population in England and around 550 000 people in the UK are unaware that they have diabetes ( Diabetes UK, 2015:2 ; Public Health England, 2014a ). This article explains how diabetes is diagnosed and explores the need for a national screening programme in the UK.
