Abstract

The author of this book is Emeritus Professor of Pathology at the University of Minnesota and a keen student of diabetes. He has carefully recorded his extensive observations and has added much to the knowledge of this disease. This volume recounts his work, and in it he records clinical and pathological observations upon 2,529 patients who had diabetes mellitus. For all these reasons I started reading with great expectations. The best part of the book is that which records its experienced author's data. This particular section contains a whole necklace of pearls: the lifespan of diabetics by age group and in three different periods—before insulin, before antibiotics, and after antibiotics; analyses of the causes of death; comparisons of the incidence, by age group, of the various types of vascular disease in diabetics and nondiabetics; the relationship of vascular disease to duration of diabetes at various ages....
