Abstract
The assumption of detailed balancing in the hydrogen lines is discussed, and its validity in the layers of continuum formation is established. The assumption of detailed balancing in the lines and in the Lyman continuum is then used to simplify the equations of statistical equilibrium of atomic hydrogen. The equilibrium equation of H - is also considered. The equation of radiative transfer in the continuum is obtained for the case of deviations from LTE in the bound states, and the qualitative aspects of the solution are investigated.
