Abstract

It has been shown that the factors that determine a physical parameter of a monosubstituted hydrocarbon derivative originate mainly from the alkyl group. Thus, the physical parameters of any two series of these compounds, whether constitutive or not, plot linearly against each other. Examples are given which demonstrate that non-constitutive parameters such as normal boiling points or indices of refraction, can be converted into constitutive ones by combining them with a constitutive parameter corresponding to the same homologous sequence. The implication of this to the recently reported deviation of the long-chain aliphatic compounds from Trouton's rule is discussed.
