Abstract

Total drilling activity decreased 34.6% in 1961. In 1960, 2,140 wells were drilled as compared with 1,589 wells in 1961. Exploratory wells totaled 388, a decrease of 4.8% from the 577 of the previous year. Development drilling during 1961 decreased 30.1% with 1,201 wells as compared with 1,563 wells in 1960. Total oil production decreased 4.7% from 46,122,658 bbls. produced in 1960 to 44,040,945 bbls. in 1961. This decrease is due to a decline in exploratory and development drilling and to a decrease in allowable days from 104 days in 1960 to 99 days in 1961. Geophysical activity decreased 86.6% with a total of 112 crew-weeks in 1961 as compared with 209 crew-weeks for 1960. Technical methods were credited with the majority of new discoveries.
