Abstract
Drilling activity in South Texas increased from 1,733 wells drilled in 1973 to 2,282 wells drilled in 1974. The percentage of successful exploratory wells increased from 14% in 1973 to 32% this year. Development-well successes were up 1.1% over the 1972 percentage of 76.3%. The main exploration targets were the Frio and Wilcox trends with the Cretaceous and Miocene not far behind. The Wilcox play in Webb and Zapata Counties continued to have the most activity. At year-end the number of active rotary rigs was 33. Offshore activity was up with 163 new wells drilled versus 72 for the year before. However, the success ratio for reported exploratory wells was only 8%.
