Abstract

Drilling activity in South Texas decreased from 1,777 wells in 1972 to 1,733 wells in 1973. This is a decline of 2%. Exploratory wells were slightly more successful than last year with 14% of the wildcats being discoveries. Development successes were down 4.3% from 1972's 76.3%. The Paleozoic trend (Pennsylvanian) has received much attention in Edwards County, whereas, on the other hand, Real County has turned in its first production. Cretaceous drilling has been quite active with the San Miguel and Olmos sands being of prime importance. The Cretaceous Sligo did not yield any new production. Eocene discoveries were led by drilling for the Wilcox Group in Webb and Duval Counties. Frio sands continued to be attractive for both exploration and development. San Patricio, Goli d, Victoria, and Jackson Counties all have turned in new-field discoveries. Offshore drilling increased by 92% over last year with 27 successful wells being put down.
