Abstract
Drilling was down slightly in South Texas for 1971 to 1,656 wells compared with 1,758 wells in 1970. Exploratory drilling was 14.8% successful, up from 13.8% in 1970. Geophysical activity declined 20.3%. Activity increased offshore and in Jurassic-Cretaceous, while the other trends dropped significantly. Some unsuccessful drilling continued in the Paleozoic trend. The Jurassic trend had 3 deep wells drilling. The Cretaceous trend shallow San Miguel (Upper Cretaceous) play continued and 1 new discovery continued the interest. A new Edwards (Lower Cretaceous) limestone discovery kept activity up in that part of the trend. Frio gas discoveries in Aransas and Kleberg Counties, as well as deeper Frio oil pays in Refugio County, were important in the Oligocene-Miocene trend exp oration.
