Abstract

A total of 2,051 wells was drilled in South Texas during 1969, compared with 1,532 in 1968. Exploratory drilling for the year was 23.9% successful, an increase of 0.9% from 1968. Total seismic activity decreased 25.3%. Activity decreased in all trends except the Jurassic-Cretaceous. Exploratory drilling in the Paleozoic trend continued but was unsuccessful. Only 1 Jurassic test was drilled in South Texas, where this trend remains in an early stage of exploration. Exploratory drilling for the Sligo Formation (Lower Cretaceous) continued. A significant discovery in the downdip Wilcox trend was made in Zapata County. Most prolific discovery of the area appears to be in Jackson County where a new Frio (multipay) oil field was found. A significant Vicksburg gas field was discovered in Hidalgo County.
