Abstract
Changes in technology in banking are happening every day. Many countries, including the UK, are looking at electronic funds transfer at the point of sale (EFTPOS) systems, which should eventually cut costs in handling cash, cheques and credit cards. France has put much investment into smart cards, which have also been seen to have applications in defence and medicine. As networks become larger and more open, security becomes a bigger problem. The technology involved is increasingly pan of the product offered by the banks and DP should therefore move closer to general management for design of products and systems.
