Abstract

Total drilling in the Four Corners-Intermountain area during 1971 was down slightly from 1970. However, exploratory drilling was up, and success rates were higher than in 1970. Significant discoveries were made in the Uinta basin of northeastern Utah and the San Juan basin of northwestern New Mexico. Continued leasing and geophysical activity during 1971, together with the 1971 discoveries, should result in an increase in both exploratory and development drilling during 1972. The increased price of natural gas paid to producers will result in increased gas exploration and development throughout the area.
