Abstract
The number of exploratory wells drilled in the Four Corners-Intermountain area during 1967 continued to decline, a trend that has persisted for several years. This decline was greatest in northern New Mexico. Oil discoveries in Utah's Uinta basin and in northeastern Arizona, and a gas discovery in the Salt anticline region of southwestern Colorado, should help to reduce this decline during 1968. Development drilling also decreased during 1967 in all parts of the area except Arizona. The largest decrease was in the San Juan basin of New Mexico followed by the Uinta basin in Utah. Increased leasing activity noted during 1967 should result in an increase of exploratory drilling during 1968, particularly in the Uinta basin, on the Defiance uplift, and throughout the Salt anticline region.
