Abstract
Biomedical Engineering covers a very wide range of activities. As a result, any book on the subject can only deal with a limited number of topics. So states the publisher's blurb on the dust jacket of this volume, which consists of papers presented at a symposium on prosthetic valves, pumps, and extracorporeal machines held in England in 1970. As the proceedings of a symposium, the work is selective rather than comprehensive, and is in no sense a text. The general thrust is towards engineers interested in biology rather than physicians interested in engineering. As is so often the case in collections of this kind, the quality of the offerings is, at best, mixed. Some of the papers attempt to provide a basic background in their subject matter; others read like an undigested report of the last two weeks' experience in the author's laboratory.
