Abstract

Developmentally appropriate practices provide children with concrete and real experiences that are relevant to their own life experience. Learning is prompted through free play where children can choose from a variety of activities, materials, and equipment, and have time to explore them through active involvement and interaction with adults and children. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the beliefs of kindergarten principals, teachers, and parents about developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood programs at the kindergarten level in Taiwan. The findings of this study were as follows (1) Responses to each DAP item among principals, kindergarten teachers, and parents in Taiwan were similar and seemed to agree with NAEYC guidelines; (2) Principals, kindergarten teachers, and parents in Taiwan had diverse opinions concerning DIP items. Principals and teachers agreed more with NAEYC guidelines than did parents regarding DIP items. However, parents tended to favor more traditional approaches to kindergarten education.
