Abstract

As of January 2022, more than 1,000,000 individuals in the United States have died from COVID-19, and more than 200,000 children in the country have lost parents or primary caregivers to the pandemic, with communities of color being disproportionately impacted. Children may be at heightened risk for developing traumatic stress reactions to COVID-19–related deaths. These reactions resemble the symptoms of PTSD, and may occur with, or independently of, prolonged grief disorder. Child and adolescent psychiatrists can benefit from recognizing these reactions to COVID-19 deaths, as well as developmentally and culturally informed evidence-based treatments for them.
