Abstract
Currently, there is a high incidence of depression and suicidal ideation among adolescents which has serious adverse effects on the adolescent's physical and mental health. This study evaluated developmental relations between depression and suicidal ideation among Chinese adolescents. We conducted a three-wave longitudinal study with 1214 participants over one year. Latent change score analysis was employed to examine the univariate and bivariate changes of depression and suicidal ideation. Univariate models indicated a slow increase in both depression and suicidal ideation over time. Bivariate models indicated previous levels of suicidal ideation were positively linked to the subsequent depression growth, but the reverse relation was not found. Our findings contribute to the literature by suggesting a change pattern of suicidal ideation and depression among Chinese adolescents.
