Abstract

Isertia Schreb. is a Rubiaceae associated with secondary tropical forests, represented by fifteen species distributed in Central and South America. The fruit of Isertia hypoleuca Benth. displays morphological peculiarities which, along with imprecise use of fruit terminology and typology, hamper its classification. We studied I. hypoleuca Benth. pericarp and seed morphologically and anatomically with the objectives of establishing the ontogenetic stages of fruit development and correcty interpret fruit typology. Four stages were recorded; main features are differences in exocarp color, biomass increment, and endocarp and exotesta sclerification process. Based on ontogeny, we classifiy the fruit of I. hypoleuca as a drupe.
