Abstract

Colobomas of the retina and choroid (0.14% incidence) represent a developmental abnormality usually involving the closure of the fetal fissure during embryonic development. Colobmas can involve the optic nervehead, retina, choroid, ciliary body, lens, and iris tissue. The mechanism of coloboma formation is still not well understood, but has been associated, in some cases, with chromosomal defects such as trisomy 13 and trisomy 18, as well as with use of toxic drugs such as thalidomide.
