Abstract

The present study deals with the development of the skeletal elements of the pharyngeal jaw apparatus and their articulation with the neurocranium in a generalized haplochromine species, Astatotilapia elegans ( = Haplochromis elegans). Problems of the homology of the elements constituting the upper pharyngeal jaws are discussed. In early developmental stages the paired articular facets of the neurocranial apophysis are formed by the parasphenoid bone. During further development the basioccipital bone grows anteriorly and the surface area of each articular facet increases. We hypothesize that the bone-like material on the upper pharyngeal jaws and skull base apophysis is deposited by calcification of a type of adventitious cartilage.
